Five arrested in Cornwall day centre neglect investigation

Five carers at a day centre for people with learning disabilities in Cornwall have been arrested over alleged neglect.

Those arrested – 2 men and 3 women – all worked at the John Daniel Centre in Penzance. They have been released on bail until June. The arrests come after a number of staff at the centre were suspended in November last year after concerns were raised. The John Daniel Centre in Penzance caters for more than 80 people with learning disabilities, providing on- and off-site activities. It is currently running normally, according to Cornwall Council.

Armand Toms, cabinet member for Adult Care and Support, said: “Our number one priority has always been to make sure we maintain a safe service, and we have been able to do that and keep John Daniel Centre open during this investigation.  We would like to note our appreciation of the efforts of staff, people who use the service and their families, who have all helped to keep the service going.”

Cornwall Council has also announced that the management is to start its own investigations with suspended staff at the John Daniel Centre who are not the subject of police action. This process is expected to take 6 to 8 weeks, and the council has engaged an independent person to assist with this.
